Sight Words

 Sight Words
Sight words, also known as dolch words, are very important for your child to master because, sight words account for up to 75% of the words used in beginning children's printed material.
There are different sight words at each grade level.  Each set of words builds upon the other, meaning that once a student learns the sight words in Kindergarten, he will be expected to still recognize those words as he learns new words in first grade, and so forth.

Sight word recognition is important because it improves reading fluency and automaticity, allowing the student to focus their efforts on the more mentally demanding task of reading comprehension.

Sight word practice is part of your child's homework each night.  It is important to vary the way your child practices the words each day to keep it fun and engaging.  You can also search for other sight word games on line.  If you find one you like, please let me know so I can add it to the Sight Word Practice Activities.  Please be sure to supervise your child while they are on internet.  If you lose or need additional flashcards they can be found here.
